We caught up with Anna, the brilliant creator behind Anna in Aberdeenshire - the region’s go-to for discovering walks and great food and drink spots across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. As a mum of two under three herself, she sat down with us to share five easy, low-cost family days out for the Easter holidays and beyond.
Below, you’ll find some fantastic ideas for a day out - including the furry members too. From hidden gems and pram-friendly paths to spots with lovely local cafés nearby, there’s something for the whole family.
Take a look at her recommendations…
Fetternear Palace, near Kemnay
“This fantastic walk is perfect for buggies, with flat paths and a magical castle ruin to explore. It’s a true hidden gem that not many people know about.
“There’s also a small car park, and a lovely river runs alongside the path before you reach the ruins. It’s an exciting walk for little ones, with great spots for a picnic along the way.
“Cot-Town Woods is nearby if you’d like to extend your walk too, bringing the total distance to around 8km - just bear in mind that the woodland paths aren’t buggy-friendly.”
Pitfour Lake, near Mintlaw
“A really lovely, flat path to follow, with plenty of wildlife along the way - including swans and ducks for little ones to spot. It’s a pretty, manageable 3km route, ideal for younger children. And if you’ve got a dog, this is a great one to visit too.
“Plus, Aden Country Park is nearby and features a fantastic new children’s play area, as well as a café - the perfect spot to stop for a coffee and a sweet treat.”
Stonehaven beach front
“With the boardwalk, it’s a great accessible walk for all. The historic harbour and unique sculptures along the route mean there’s plenty to see along the way. If you’d like to make it a longer walk, you can continue on towards Dunnottar Castle.
“On a nice day, the harbour beach is perfect for building sandcastles too. There’s nothing better for kids than spending time at the beach in the fresh sea air - especially when it’s followed by a chippy from The Bay Fish & Chips and an ice cream from Aunty Betty’s afterwards.”
Scolty Hill, near Banchoy
“This one is a bit steeper, so it’s ideal if you’re looking for more of a challenge. Children aged 5-6+ should be able to manage, and it’s a great way for kids to ease into hill walking and feel a real sense of achievement when they reach the top.
“On the way home, don’t forget to stop by Ride Coffee House for a drink and a bite to eat!”
Duthie Park and the River Dee, Aberdeen
“For those in Aberdeen, Duthie Park is a favourite spot for many families, thanks to its flat paths, play park, and Winter Gardens.
“But don’t forget, it’s really easy to extend your walk along the River Dee and enjoy the lovely views. Pop into The Roost for a treat at the end - it makes for such a lovely city stroll.”
Anna’s top tips for heading out with little ones:
- Pack snacks that last - I always take things like berries, which are perfect for keeping little ones busy on the walk.
- Get them involved - I let my kids choose a few items to take with them or pack their own little treasures. It keeps them engaged and off screens.
- Take the buggy - I always bring ours, as little ones can get tired or change their minds once we reach our destination.
- Follow their interests - every child is different. Encouraging them in their own way helps them develop a love and respect for nature.
- Recommended gear - I really recommend Out n About Pushchairs & Prams. They’re brilliant on all sorts of terrain, and I use both a single and a double every day. You can use the code ABERDEENSHIREWALKS10 for 10% off.
